“Healing is an art. It takes time, it takes practice. It takes love.”
– Maza Dohta
All my life, I have been a very academically-driven individual. I grew up with a strong desire to perform well and raise the bar year after year. This, of course, came with many ups and downs. I take pride in my achievements, but I can also admit that sometimes I lost sight of what really mattered, as well as what I enjoyed outside of academics, when things got tough. I used to surround myself with creativity through dance, theater, and choir, which brought me so much joy. However, I lost those activities and that passion as I went to college, laser-focused on excelling in my new classes.
As humans, we are frequently too hard on ourselves and forget that we are doing the best that we can, given the circumstances. Sometimes it seems like the world is not on our side, and this is when we need to take a step back, breathe, and look in with a fresh perspective.
Through a great deal of introspection and branching out, I have rediscovered enjoyment in the things I used to love and make conscious effort to weave them into each day. Whether I am singing in the car, going for a walk, reading a new book in my hammock, or sitting down with my paint-by-numbers, there is a piece of my past, and happiness, in each activity.
Recently, I have begun to uncover new interests and find myself drawn to functional and integrative healthcare. Specifically, I am fascinated by how much our diet and lifestyle choices affect our brain, in addition to our body. Neuropsychology has always been an interest of mine, but looking at it through this lens is brand new. Going forward in my professional career, I am eager to gain as much knowledge in this field as I can.
I have learned a lot about myself in these past few transformative years, but I still have an endless journey of learning ahead of me.
