Frodo: I wish none of this had happened.

Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

– J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

As with many, I feel as if I was born in the wrong era. Being referred to as “an old soul”, I long nostalgically for a “simpler time”.  Growing up, I spent my summers on my great grandfather’s farm where I learned that “it is no bad thing to celebrate a simple life”. We ate fruit from trees we planted, frolicked in fields in flowy dresses, and cooled off in the creek on a hot day.

Current events make me miss those days, even more. With how much hatred and dichotomy are portrayed on the news, it becomes difficult to see hope for the world. You pair that with social media creating an unrealistic reality and it is no wonder so many struggle with anxiety and depression. How much simpler would life be in a hobbit-like home surrounded by a force field of fresh flowers?

We can try to keep negativity out, ignoring things that make us uncomfortable, but nobody’s immune to hardships. Sauron was still gathering an army even if the hobbits of the shire ignored its potential impact on them.  Bad things still happen, even in simpler times.

Besides, the brain is anything but simple. During my years at University, I learned about the complexity of the brain and how we are continuing to learn more about it every day. I studied how chemistry, biology, neurology, and psychology all work together to help us understand our minds better. What an age to be alive where we have options to help us become healthier in a more holistic way!

How I have decided to use the time given to me is utilizing cutting-edge neuroscience and my skills as a data scientist to help your brain process more efficiently and provide tangible feedback on the progress you are making in therapy. When I am not working, I enjoy grilling with my husband, hiking with my aussie, and trying to make the world around me a little better. So, what will you decide to do with the time given to you?
